Medal Highlights:
The Silla dynasty ruled much of the Korean peninsula during the Medieval period of human history. The kingdom initially formed along much of the east coast of the peninsula and ruled alongside two other Korean dynasties, the Baekje and Goguryeo. These dynasties were known as the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The Silla dynasty is the best remembered because of the ornate gold crowns that were often buried alongside its leaders after death.
A gold crown from the Silla dynasty features on the obverse of 2021 South Korean Gold Crown Medals. This design reflects the Silla crown from the National Treasures of South Korea known as National Treasure No. 87. This is the largest gold crown from the Silla dynasty ever discovered and it was found in the tomb at Geumgwanchong, which translates to English as The Gold Crown Tomb that was named as such after the discovery of this treasure. The latent security image on this side changes visual elements as you move the coin around in your hand.
Sam jok-o is featured in the reverse design of the 2021 1 oz Gold Crown Medal. The image of Sam jok-o has graced the reverse of all the gold medals in this series. A three-legged crow, Sam jok-o is a mythological creature that is said to inhabit the Sun and serves as a representative of the Sun in the mythology of various East Asian cultures.
