On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that two battalions of Marines be raised for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the historic birth of the United States Marine Corps.

The United States Marine Corps is a separate military service within the formidable Department of the Navy. This elite task force is charged with the provision of Marine forces for seizure and defense of advanced bases and with carrying out operations on land and in the air incident to naval campaigns. It is also responsible for providing security forces for naval shore installations and U.S. diplomatic missions in foreign countries. The Corps specializes in amphibious landings, such as those undertaken against Japanese-held islands in the Pacific during the Second World War.
