Johnson Matthey was once among the largest refiners of gold and silver in the world. Founded in the early 19th century in London, Johnson Matthey built an international presence in precious metals and focused on the production of bullion bars. Most of its products were minted ingots or hand-poured silver bars.
In 2016, Johnson Matthey’s primary refining facilities and assaying location in North America were sold to Asahi Refining, a Tokyo-based refiner of metals. This marked the exit of Johnson Matthey from the precious metals market, but it didn’t symbolize the end of its products as a viable option to purchase.
