25 Utah Goldback – Victoria (Victory)
The 25 Utah Goldback showcases Victoria, the personification of Victory, commemorating a profound chapter in American and Utah history: the fight for women’s suffrage. As the first design ever conceived for the Goldback series, this artwork set the precedent for its symbolic and artistic depth. Victoria stands with confidence and resolve, carrying a banner inscribed with the words “Votes Counting Since 1870”—a proud nod to Utah’s historic role in women’s voting rights. While Wyoming was the first territory to grant women suffrage, Utah was the first where a woman—Seraph Young—cast her vote.
Victoria is not alone; a child walks at her side, representing the vital connection between mothers and future generations. The child carries a budding branch, symbolizing the stewardship of freedom and responsibility passed from one generation to the next. This mother-child motif also pays homage to the many women who marched for suffrage with their children by their side, linking civic progress to familial legacy and the moral education of youth.
In Victoria’s left hand, she bears a flag topped with the Chi-Rho, an ancient Christian symbol for Christ. This emblem reflects the faith that inspired Utah’s women to press forward in their pursuit of liberty. In her right arm, she holds bundled stalks of wheat—each individual stalk a small victory, bound together into something powerful and enduring. A falcon soars behind her, embodying hope and the faithful return to cherished values.
The backdrop features the scenic mountain vistas of Alpine, Utah—visible from the very studio where this artwork was created. Victoria walks a straight stone path bordered on one side by a wall, signifying enduring strength built one victory at a time, and on the other by aspen trees, whose interconnected roots echo the unity and shared heritage of humanity, especially through the contributions of women. Beneath her feet reads the encouraging call: “Go on to Victory.”
